Tree Canopy Committee

Dilworth's tree canopy is aging and we are losing a great number of mature shade trees.

Join us in our mission to preserve, protect, and plant trees in Dilworth.

Share the Shade
Tree Planting Fundraiser

Welcome to the 2023 Share the Shade tree fundraiser. Our goal is to raise money to plant more street trees throughout Dilworth. The campaign will run through December 9th, 2023. A portion - 20 percent - of what we raise will work toward equity by supporting the tree canopy of neighbors living in a nearby neighborhood with fewer funding resources, this year in McCrorey Heights in support of TreesCharlotte's efforts.

A bit of background:

Street trees are the public trees typically between the street and the sidewalk which are managed by the City of Charlotte. City Arborists are charged with managing these trees - for trimming the trees, removing diseased/damaged trees, and for selecting and planting new trees. The City is also responsible for funding all of these projects. However, with tight budgets and stretched resources, funding falls short of replacing all lost trees.

For the past 4 years, DCA’s Tree Canopy Committee raised funds to supplement the City’s street tree plantings in Dilworth. Thanks to the generosity of  hundreds of neighbors, we were able to plant just over 100 good sized street trees throughout Dilworth. On top of that, the City of Charlotte planted over 150 street trees in the neighborhood over the past 4 years. Combined we added over 250 new trees to our canopy.

But with all the success we have had, we’re working from a deficit position and have more planting spots than current funding can fill. The City will continue to plant some street trees in Dilworth, but monies from this fundraiser will supplement that, and will fill in gaps identified by the volunteer-led Dilworth street tree census. We now know where we're missing canopy trees, we can be proactive and act NOW to plant. The sooner we plant, the faster our tree canopy rebounds.

And that's where we need you. We need your financial support. Please donate and help us fill the gaps and leave a legacy for future generations.

Response to Recent Media Coverage

Dilworth is a historic district and the neighborhood has been concerned about saving the Leeper & Wyatt building since the property owner filed for demolition on December 8, 2021.  Subsequently the DCA has collaborated with 3 different developers in an effort to save the historic building.  Since we began working with the petitioner the DCA has consistently maintained that we want to save the building and abide by the ordinance.  The DCA and the Dilworth neighbors support saving the Leeper & Wyatt building.

The petition presented at the Council Hearing on Monday, September 18 did not include the technical revisions required by Planning Staff per the UDO. The language regarding the 10 leased off-site parking places was unenforceable.  The DCA's request on Monday night was simply to include lease language that is enforceable. The DCA has not opposed any other exception requested by the petitioner and is asking the petitioner to continue to cooperate with us and the Planning Staff in order to save the Leeper & Wyatt building.
