40th Anniversary of the Dilworth Home Tour

Charlotte’s “first suburb” celebrates its 40th Home Tour with a great selection of historic and new homes and other festivities.

The community of Dilworth will be hosting its 40th neighborhood Home Tour on Friday, September 21 from 6-9 PM and Saturday, September 22 from 10 AM – 4 PM. Tickets for the 2012 Dilworth Home Tour will be available for purchase via Paypal on the home page of this website, and in person at Paper Skyscraper, BLACKLION (Dilworth), Park Road Books, Dilworth Drug, and T. Reid & Company.

This year’s Dilworth Home Tour features nine (9) homes with distinctions ranging from truly retaining their historical integrity to complete tear down and rebuilds. Some of the homes are in the heart of the historic district and others are in the quickly changing areas such as near the commuter train line and Freedom Park. Five of the homes are most noteworthy for their historic charm. The four remaining homes each contain special features making them equally as interesting.

Of special note is 428 East Kingston Avenue. This 107 year-old home had lost its original grandeur through years of neglect and conversion into apartments so much that it was considered for demolition by the 1970’s. Fortunately, it was saved and renovated in 1989. Its current owner, Daniel Austin, then purchased it in 2001 and further restored its original glory.

In addition to exploring the wonderful spectacle of homes, ticketholders are invited to a wine tasting The Wine Shop on Park Rd. on Friday, September 21 from 5-9 PM.

Each year, the non-profit Dilworth Community Development Association (“DCDA”) stages Charlotte’s oldest home tour with proceeds benefiting DCDA efforts such as the fall Dilworth Jubilee, Conquer the Cankerworm tree banding, and contributions to groups such as Historic Charlotte. 20% of gross Tour proceeds support the DCDA’s giving arm called Dilworth Cares. Dilworth Cares designates a local charity each year to receive funds from several neighborhood functions throughout the year. This year’s Dilworth Cares recipient is Charlotte Family Housing.
