STRAWN REZONING DEFERRED BY CITY COUNCIL

  • Written by Quincy Acklen
After a motion by Patsy Kinsey, City Council voted last night to defer the "hearing" for the rezoning of the 17-acre Strawn site in Dilworth to Monday, July 19 (mark your calendar in case). They will vote on the rezoning at their September meeting, giving some time to make further changes to this plan. Please know that this could only have happened with all the emails and phone calls that everyone took the time to make, as well as the 346 petition signatures. Council members said they'd never received such a large number of articulate emails. The Dilworth Online Forum might be a great place to further discussion and suggestions on this matter.

OPPOSE Rezoning Petition 2010-022

  • Written by Quincy Acklen

IT’S TIME TO ACT … Rezoning Petition 2010-022 goes before City Council this coming Monday night, 6/21 @6:00 pm

Charlotte Housing Authority (CHA) plans to rezone the 17-acre Strawn site (bounded by South Blvd, Rensselaer, Euclid, Templeton & Caldwell) and then sell off parcels to developers. CHA’s current plan for this site:

  • ignores the recommendations of the Urban Land Institute (ULI), the world-class land planning group - and in fact almost triples ULI recommendation of about 674 units on site
  • disregards the ULI challenge to create a mixed-income, affordable housing site for Charlotte
  • given the sites proximity to historic residential and the city's acknowledged sensitivity to that fact, we certainly would expect a plan that falls below TOD maximums. This rezoning has development rights that are equivalent to almost 1 1/2 South Park malls!
  • does not provide specific development standards that protect adjacent neighbors or the community
DCDA welcomes development on this site BUT voted unanimously at its June meeting to oppose this project in its current form, believing it needed more time and thoughtful collaboration

LET CITY COUNCIL HEAR YOUR VOICE … DON’T WAIT (WE ONLY HAVE THREE DAYS) !!!

  1. Email and/or call your elected officials (see contact information below)
  2. Respond 'yes' to Betsy Turner ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) that you will attend the Monday, 6/21 meeting at 6:00 pm at the Government Center, 600 East Fourth Street, Main Floor. Let us know if you need a ride! We can connect you with someone nearby who is carpooling to the meeting. The council needs to see that Dilworth residents are united in their opposition to this massive development in its current form. Wear a green shirt if possible and be prepared to stand when the DCDA speakers present.
  3. Sign petition located at http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/strawnrezoning/ (if you get a message requesting donation it is not necessary to sign petition, simply bypass this message - your signature and comments will be added)

The message can be as brief as "I oppose this rezoning petition" OR as detailed as you like! Just get it out ASAP. Email each council member separately and not as a group

Charlotte Housing Authority - Redevelopment History

  • Written by Quincy Acklen

Background on CHA Redevelopment in Dilworth

In August of 2008 the Charlotte Housing Authority hired the internationally recognized Urban Land Institute (ULI) to create a master plan for their 17-acre site. ULI invited members of the DCDA and Strawn residents to several meetings to solicit their input on how best to redesign their site.

Log information about your valuables

FROM OUR COMMUNITY POLICE OFFICERS
Please click here for a handy Excel spreadsheet to help you log important information about your valuables. (excel or pdf)
Police officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department often encounter property that we believe may be stolen. When possible, we check the serial number for the property against our own records and against a national database. For this tactic to be successful, the serial number for the stolen item has to have been recorded. Stolen items sometimes end up in pawn shops. Sometimes they are sold online. The key to being able to successfully return items to their rightful owners, is clearly identifying the property being sold as the same property taken from a victim.

Dilworth Food Pantry Co-Op Pitches In

  • Written by Merrie McGrath

As everyone no doubt knows, demand is higher than ever at our area food pantries and donations are down as a result of the economic downturn.  In response to the ever increasing need, some neighbors have devised a way to pitch in and help by forming the Dilworth Food Pantry Co-Op.

The concept is simple:  Neighbors buy sale items at their grocery or warehouse store and leave them on their front porch (one suggestion is to add the item “food pantry” to your grocery list as a reminder).  They then email or call Co-Op coordinators, MerrieMcGrath and her son, Aubrey, at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Aggressive Moves of Carolina Healthcare System

DCDA, CHS work to straighten out 'misperceptions'

Concerns over CHS’s acquisition of Dilworth properties highlights need for communication Following UNC’s endorsement in March of plans to expand its School of Medicine in Charlotte, Carolinas HealthCare System has drawn increasing scrutiny as it acquires properties near its medical center in Dilworth. Rumor and conjecture gained steam this summer when CHS, through its real estate representative Lincoln Harris, added properties along East Boulevard and Fountain View Street to its already significant holdings.

Update: Trolley Tracks found during East Boulevard Pedscape Construction

  • Written by Wes Kenney, Neighborhood Environment Committee

The construction phase for the East Blvd Pedscape is well underway, and it is hard to miss. But what you may have missed is that the construction uncovered a bit of Dilworth history, the original trolley tracks that ran on East. Edward Latta originally designed East Blvd to be the centerpiece of his neighborhood and ran the trolley line down it. Wouldn’t it be great if it still did?

Pedscape construction is expected to be completed by August, 2010. The construction is designed to minimize disruption to the neighborhood and be completed well in time for the Greek Festival in September, 2010.
