Vacationing Over the Fourth?

  • Written by Carla Ashton

If you expect to be away next week, you have the option of Police "zone checks" of your empty house.  Any citizen in Mecklenburg County may arrange for an officer to come by to check doors and windows and survey the premises for anything suspicious.  The information is available to officers, but checks are not guaranteed on a daily basis or at certain times of the day.

To arrange a zone check, email your name and address, the dates you will be away, a telephone number where you can be reached while away from home and any details such as whether someone has permission to be on your property feeding a pet, watering plants, etc.  Emails may be sent to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Every bit of your Dilworth's website has been updated in the last several weeks, and our new motto is

"IF YOU CAN"T FIND IT HERE, IT MIGHT NOT BE HAPPENING!

Check out the menu to the left----want to know about DCDA's  brand new charitable initiative, Dilworth Cares? Just a click away. How about (nearly) everything fun going on in Dilworth that DCDA has a hand in? Click on FUN STUFF WE DO and see what pops up. TOADS, JUBILEE, SUMMER CAMPS AT SYKES, SOCCER AND TENNIS CAMPS.....bet you never knew how much fun stuff was going on.

Maybe the best link....-don't miss it.....is click on GET INVOLVED. It's at the bottom of the menu list, but should be at the top of your list! Pages of your questions are answered----contact names and emails addresses for just about everything that's happening, from "Who do I contact about approvals for state tax credits for my renovation?" to "How do I volunteer for a Home Tour shift?" to "How do I make sure I am invited to the Dilworth Ladies Parties?" Or how about wanting to know who your Neighborhood Network block captain is? Or if you even have one? Or if you can be one if you don't have one?

You get the picture.

So BOOKMARK THIS SITE TODAY and check back often. We may be sending you fewer (or shorter) emails, and rather directing you to links in this site instead----or maybe just a weekly calendar link so you can check it all out yourself. Either way......the choice is yours to get connected and stay connected to all that's happening------the information will be here waiting for you. Use it! And enjoy!

2009 36th Annual Dilworth Criterium

  • Written by Jason Galek

It was another fantastic Dilworth Criterium! For the 36th year, the Dilworth Criterium Presented by Duke Energy hit the streets around Latta Park on May 2.

Professional cyclists from around the globe came to our neighborhood to compete for over $10,000 in prize money. This is the second year we’ve been part of USA Crits Speed Week, helping us draw some of the best pro criterium racers in the world. This year stormy weather played a role in the main event, and things were more exciting than ever! New sponsors this year were BikeSource, Absolute Remodeling, Dilworth Drug, SL Laser Systems. Carolinas Medical Center provided medical support and Keffer Volkswagen supplied the pace vehicles. Returning sponsors were Duke Energy, Giordana, SouthPark Cycles, Owen’s Bagel and Deli, Fabrix, Fuel Pizza, Allen Tate Realtors, and Widmer Hefeweizen. We appreciate everyone’s continued support and hope to make next year’s event even better.

Dilworth Food Pantry Co-Op Pitches In

  • Written by Merrie McGrath

As everyone no doubt knows, demand is higher than ever at our area food pantries and donations are down as a result of the economic downturn.  In response to the ever increasing need, some neighbors have devised a way to pitch in and help by forming the Dilworth Food Pantry Co-Op.

The concept is simple:  Neighbors buy sale items at their grocery or warehouse store and leave them on their front porch (one suggestion is to add the item “food pantry” to your grocery list as a reminder).  They then email or call Co-Op coordinators, MerrieMcGrath and her son, Aubrey, at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Dilworth Home Tour Set For 2009

  • Written by Ann Willey

"I'm convinced serving as a head hostess for the Home Tour is one of the best volunteer jobs around.
I sent out one email in March asking for hosts and hostesses and about 48 hours later had gotten almost 30 volunteers----enough to staff 3 or 4 houses! People love to go to the tour, and they love to work for the tour.
It's the most fun way to give back to Dilworth that I know of."

As they have every year since their founding in 1973, the Dilworth Home Tour and Jubilee provide a window into the community of Dilworth for our fellow citizens. The 37th Annual Dilworth Home Tour will be held on September 18th, 2009 from 6pm-9pm and 19th from 10am-4pm.

Seven fantastic homes have been identified for this year's tour and over 50 hosts and hostesses have already committed to work a 2-3 hour Home Tour shift. Sponsors have been identified for homes, and many generous businesses

Aggressive Moves of Carolina Healthcare System

DCDA, CHS work to straighten out 'misperceptions'

Concerns over CHS’s acquisition of Dilworth properties highlights need for communication Following UNC’s endorsement in March of plans to expand its School of Medicine in Charlotte, Carolinas HealthCare System has drawn increasing scrutiny as it acquires properties near its medical center in Dilworth. Rumor and conjecture gained steam this summer when CHS, through its real estate representative Lincoln Harris, added properties along East Boulevard and Fountain View Street to its already significant holdings.

The Four Blocks (aka Scott Avenue, Fountain View, Garden Terrace and Lombardy Circle – north side of East Blvd) met with CHS recently. CHS provided us with the following information verbally but would not provide a written copy of their presentation citing competition fears. CHS did provide the Four Blocks with a hard copy of their map titled "CHS Owned properties new CMC":

DEMOLITION PLANS

CHS plans to demolish the following buildings once East Blvd B&G moves to Latta Pavilion. This move is currently scheduled for the first quarter of 2009. They are unsure what they will do with this property once these buildings have been demolished.

  • 1601 East Blvd (currently occupied by East Boulevard Bar & Grill, scheduled to move to Latta Pavilion 01/09)
  • 1607-09 East Blvd (previously occupied by Colours, Wax Museum, ISAACS)
  • 1729 Garden Terrace (previously occupied by Full Closet)
  • 1746 Lombardy Circle (previously occupied by Forest & Kinney Interiors)
  • 1742 Lombardy Circle (previously occupied by Ho-Ho’s Chinese Restaurant)
  • 1641 Garden Terrace (currently vacant residential property-being used for storing hospital equipment)
