UPCOMING EVENTS – SPRING 2008

Saturday, March 15, 9am - 1pm – At-home Composting Workshop

By P.L.A.N.T. (Piedmont Landscape & Naturescape Training)   This class will be held at the Charlotte Nature Museum, 1658 Sterling Road (near Freedom Park). Through this hands-on seminar, we will learn about at-home recycling and composting and how to improve our yards’ soils.  Experts will teach methods such as turning leaves and utilizing yard clippings and kitchen scraps to make rich compost that is invaluable as a soil amendment.  We will be making a wire-bin for our own use and taking home a reference book & manual as well.  All participants must bring a bag lunch and wear comfortable clothing.  NOTE: If you can still produce a bag or two of fallen leaves from your yard – save them and make sure they are contained in a dark plastic trash bag.  Kept in a dark place now, they will serve as a perfect start toward building your own compost in March!

Cost for this event is $12 for Discover Place members and $15 for non-members. For more information, visit www.wipeoutwaste.com

EARLY MARCH – Cleanup of Triangle at East Blvd and Dilworth Road West – Volunteers will be needed.  Date and time of cleanup will be announced to all members via broadcast email.

Dilworth / South End Rotary

The Dilworth Club, founded in 1948, is another long-time organization in our community involved in many service projects.

A message from the President                                                                              July, 2007
Dewey Jenkins

As Club President I recently had the privilege of attending the Rotary International Convention in Salt Lake City. What an experience. There were 15,400 Rotarians representing 147 countries from around the world. I met and talked with Rotarians from Nigeria, South Africa, Japan, Ukraine, Russia, Ireland, Scotland and so many others I can’t remember them all.

There was a fabulous lineup of speakers. Bill Gates, Sr. thanked us for our efforts in eradicating polio worldwide. Stephen Covey… encouraged us to “Live Life in Crescendo”… meaning that the best is yet to come no matter what our age. Rotary International President Will Wilkinson reminded us that Rotarians have so much to share and, that there is so much the world needs from us.

It is well to reflect on the successes of our international humanitarian efforts but what about locally. What will we do right here in Dilworth to better our community?

We will continue our existing programs and activities.  Currently we provide assistance to the homeless recently discharged from the hospital through our support of the Samaritan House facility located on Park Road. We provide help for those in need of temporary assistance through support of Crisis Assistance Ministries. We assist in keeping our community clean through our East Boulevard “Adopt a Street” efforts. We provide Ambassadorial Scholarships for young people to study abroad thereby fostering understanding and cooperation among peoples from around the world. Plus, we provide volunteers to support the Salvation Army, USO, Boy Scouts and Easter Seals organizations.

In addition to the above, I will have two areas of emphases during my term as President.  The first is serving the Dilworth business community. We are currently the premier civic club in Dilworth. Our members include bankers, mortgage brokers, homebuilders, physicians, dentists, accountants, attorneys, air conditioning and electrical contractors, wealth managers and realtors to name just a few. We want to specifically focus on business owners in the Dilworth area and provide them with opportunities for networking, opportunities for community service and opportunities to raise the profile of their business.

The second area of emphasis is to identify a signature project that Dilworth South End Rotary Club can sponsor. One that will raise the visibility of the Dilworth Community and provide financial support for a local charitable organization. The fundraising event itself will need to be held in Dilworth. The charitable organization that benefits from the fundraising will not have to be located in Dilworth but it will be better if it is. We are seeking your input. If you know of a good cause or have an idea for a good event please call me. We will consider all ideas.

I look forward to this year and the opportunity it provides to strengthen the ties between Dilworth Rotary and the Dilworth Community.

A REAL BRIDGE DEAL

Competitive duplicate bridge has been active in Charlotte for several decades.  In 1973, the Charlotte Bridge Association (C.B.A.) purchased two small lots and a metal building at 220 East Park Avenue in Dilworth.  This facility allowed comfortable spacing for no more than 20 tables or 80 players.  This was sufficient for daily games, but not for tournaments where some 40 or more tables were needed.  To hold their semi annual Sectionals, the club had to rent other facilities, which meant very little financial surplus for the club.

Over a year ago, the C.B.A. started a dialogue with the Mecklenburg County Park & Recreation Department looking for space on Park & Recreation property on which to construct a building.  While this option didn’t work out, the building of the new Tom Sykes Recreation Center in Dilworth and the vacating of the Latta Recreation Center in that community provided an interesting opportunity.

C.B.A. negotiated with Park & Recreation for several months, and after agreement, went through all of the County stages for a lease approval, which was accomplished in November of 2006.  The Latta Recreation Center was a great facility for basketball, volleyball, etc., but the gym had no air conditioning, the ceiling of the gym was over 30 feet high, the kitchen was very dated and the acoustics, while great for sports, was very bad for bridge.

Contractors were selected, County and City permits were obtained, bleachers were removed and gas service was installed.  Renovation started in March of 2007.  This included dropping the ceiling in the gym, erecting several walls to reduce the space to meet fire codes for assembly, installing a new HVAC system, installing some 60 state of the art fluorescent lights in the ceiling, laying new carpeting in all bridge playing areas, installing new kitchen cabinets and appliances, modifying emergency exits, and painting all interior walls.  The final occupancy permits from Building Standards, the Charlotte Fire Department and the Dilworth Historical District were received in late May, just in time for the bridge club’s Spring Sectional, May 31-June 3.

C.B.A. welcomes bridge players at all levels, from all backgrounds, provides classes for beginners and offers daily games at a variety of hours.  The club has slightly over 400 members, with about 200 playing once or more a month and about 100 playing once or more a week.  There are no dues to join the club, and players pay a nominal charge per session.  Come join us.
The phone number is 704-333-9117.

The Relatives operates a 9-bed, co-ed shelter that provides for up to a 14-day stay for youth who are homeless, runaways or experiencing a crisis that caused them to leave home.  The shelter also operates a youth crisis telephone hotline open 24/7/365.  In 2006, two thirds of the youth staying at The Relatives returned home after their stay.

The Relatives is located at 1100 East Blvd. in Charlotte.  The agency was founded in 1974 by members of the Dilworth Methodist Church and human services professionals who were concerned about teen homelessness.  The agency was one of the first to receive funds from the Federal Homeless and Runaway Youth Act of Congress, and continues to receive annual grant funding from Congress.  Additional funds come from individuals, corporations, foundations, Mecklenburg County government, the United Way of the Central Carolinas and others.  The Relatives is a wholly owned subsidiary of Alexander Youth Network and is accredited by The Joint Commission, an organization that provides oversight and accreditation to healthcare and other human services organizations.
